Apple sucks

Seriously. I know some of you fawn over the latest Mac and iPod announcements like a junkie looking for his meth fix - but give me a break, people. Steve Jobs could take a pile of dog crap, toss a click wheel on it, and market it as a scented iPod, and some of you would immediately start foaming at the mouth for it. The clarion call for fad tech would sound far and wide, “OMG iPod Odor 4 teh win!” C’mon. It’s a portable music player. Yes, they are quite nice, and the ability to carry around a boatload of music to listen to wherever you go, without having to carry 8 jillion CDs, has quite the allure. I, myself, have such a player. But I’ll be damned if it’s an iFad.

I picked up a Creative Zen Micro. It’s small, holds a metric ton of music (I got the 6 gig version), and cost me a lot less than any Apple product of comparable size. Works great. Came with a kickass set of earbuds that sound fantastic. The software is a breeze to use - and what’s more, I don’t even have to use it if I don’t want to. I don’t even have to convert my music to Apple’s craptastic format, locking me into their annoying proprietary system. Which means, when I get my home media center done, I can put all my music in one location, and play it on whatever I damn well please.

So, please, JobsHeads (or is that HeadJobs?), keep up your Apple worship. Those of us who enjoy choice and convenience, and are willing to actually shop for a device rather than go with the herd, will be laughing at you for a good, long time.

UPDATE: I have been corrected about a misconception I had. It still doesn’t change my mind about Apple, however.

  1. Since Macs never caught on, Apple’s gotta do something to survive, right?

  2. I’ll admit to being an iPod and Mac owner. However, I actually use my iPod with a WinPC and I don’t consider myself a Mac fanatic (my iBook has needed more repairs than my car…and it’s newer). With that said I just want to correct you on one thing…
“I don’t even have to convert my music to Apple’s craptastic format, locking me into their annoying proprietary system.”

You don’t with the iPod either. It works just fine with MP3’s and iTunes will rip to that format. The only issue is with BUYING from iTunes, something I don’t do. I’d rather buy from AudioLunchbox.com and get a non-DRM MP3 format.

  3. HA! Thanks for the great laugh! I’m having a hard time typing b/c I’m still laughing.

  4. Becuase Microsoft’s DRM format is sooo much better right? At least with FairPlay you can authorize 5 computers to play a song. Plus you can actually backup your purchased music. Something that you can’t do with Windows Media DRM. Once you reload the computer upon which you purchased your music it’s tough tookies for you.

And at least my music player doesn’t have Paris Hilton as a spokesperson. Nanny nanny boo boo!

And (x2): A metric ton = 2,200 pounds. Or, just 200 pounds more than a “regular” ton. Though I still love that figure of speech.

  5. Seriously though. I like my iPod. It gets the job done just fine. I’m not a warrior for one side or against the other. It’s just technology. Though, I would rather support FairPlay than Windows Media DRM. Though a good DRM-less vendor that has the music I’m looking for would be perfect.

  6. Hey, I’m just ripping straight to MP3 format, and sticking that in the player. I completely agree that the WMDRM is horrible as well - in fact, ALL DRM more or less blows because they take away consumer choice. But I’m pretty sure I talked about that at some point.

  7. First of all, my next computer is going to be an Apple. Second of all, iPods piss me off. Their price tiering sucks (like all Apple products), and to be quite honest, they are fugly. I admit, they have really marketed the iPod brilliantly. Clueless suburbanites and hipsters alike just HAVE to get their hands on an iPod. Is it better than a regular digital music player? They have no clue. They just know that one song made those black silhouettes dance so freaking cool on those multi-colored backgrounds, that the coolest people in New York City MUST have iPods. Shuffle this, Apple.

  8. Riddle me this: which one of us is the bigger fad whore - me, for buying an iPod to listen to music, or you, for jumping on the bandwagon with the rest of the iPod Haters? Oh, you so trendy! ;)

In all that sound and fury, you never get at anything “wrong” with the iPod. Is your problem with the device? The users? The trend? Apple itself? I’m inclined to think it’s the trend, if there really is one. But contrary to popular belief, some people just buy iPods b/c they’re quality products. If your argument is that you can get just as good a product for less money, you may be right - insofar as the subjective “good” can be quantified.

Me? I just bought a nice digital music player so I could carry tunes with me in my pocket. Sure, I had a lot of other options, but I liked the iPod - simple, intuitive, functional. I don’t care for fads in technology or clothing, and *I* know that. If someone else classifies me as a trend-follower based on the single fact that I own an iPod, well, that’s one person whose opinion doesn’t matter to me. :)

So take a look in the mirror next time you’re throwing the ‘fad whore’ label around. It’s become even cooler to “hate” iPods than it is to own them. If you dislike the product and actually have a reason, hey, great - don’t buy one. Simple as that.
