All the geeks in the house, say “HO!”

Tech question.

My site is constantly under a barrage of comment spam from numerous sites. I’ve tried blocking IPs in .htaccess files. I’ve tried blocking URLs. I’ve tried moderating comments. But no matter what I do, I end up with 12-15 spam comments per day. My big question is: is there a way to block referrers? For example, here’s my list of top referrers, pulled from Webalizer from this month (Links stripped out to prevent clicking on these SOB’s):

Yeah, it’s hideous, I know. (Oh, and thanks to Gax for driving up legit visits to my site - I think I may have to sponsor him or something to compensate him.) But I’m tired of deleting posts for free-online-poker. Any ideas, kids? Keep in mind, I don’t have admin access to this server, so anything I do is pretty much limited to Apache, as well as any tricks you might have for Wordpress, for those of you who have freed themselves from the opression of Blogger.

  1. Not sure if it works for websites the way it does for normal mail, but sometimes if you open the link it will give you another link to remove yourself from the mailing list. Could try that…

  2. Sadly, that’s not the problem here. The issue is unscrupulous sites filling my logs with bunk in order to up their page rank with Google and the like. I may have a solution, but it’s going to require some testing…

  3. The only luck I’ve had is with moderating comments that contain certain words. Even then it’s a pain in the ass to go through weekly and delete them all out of moderation. I’ll definately hit you up if I find anything worth while.

  4. here, or here, or maybe this….

I tried to make them cool and clickable, but the comment didn’t post… sorry dude.

  6. I would guess that the spambots look for text=comments. Try changing the text from “comment” to something else. I don’t guarantee anything, but who knows?

  7. Admit it, you’re addicted to the World Championship of Poker that ESPN is showing 19 hours a day and these spam attacks are a result of your insatiable gambling program. Either that, or you’re just unlucky.

  8. Three rules for the spam game:

    1) you can not win.
    2) you can not draw.
    3) you can not leave the play.

    Antonio, from Malaga (Spain)
